Launching of the book Art and Politics of Ève Lamoureux

September 18th, 2009

The Book

What has happened to commitment in visual art? The mutations it has undergone since the mythical 1970s would have us believe that it has disappeared. For Ève Lamoureux, committed art has never gone away; it resists another manner, another power, lives on other grounds. Exit the division between art for art and art and the service of an idea. Exit the concept of militant cutting edge committed art. Current commitment goes by a multiform, micropolitical action, a creation caring of others, at once autonomous and collective, that puts emphasis on process and participation. In this way, the author shows us in which way art brings a new definition to political engagement.

This essay analyzes the work of contemporary Quebecois artists such as ATSA, BGL, Doyon/Demers, Danyèle Alain, Sylvie Cotton, Nicole Jolicoeur, Devora Neumark, Alain-Martin Richard, Jean-Claude St-Hilaire and Raphaëlle de Groot. In going on with respect to the theoretical plan, this book situates itself in the recent history of art and shines a light on its political dimension.

The Author

Ève Lamoureux has been interested in the relationship between art and politics for several years. Her doctoral thesis on current committed art - reorganized here - won her the first prize of the Charles-Bonenfant Foundation of the National Assembly in Quebec. A Montrealer, she teaches at the University of Laval at Quebec and is working on a post-doctorate degree at the Université libre of Brussels.
